This is one of those books you can't really criticize because they're so meaningful it feels heartless to say anything against. So while this wasn't the best book I've ever read, and it didn't have anything that original, it was still a very touching read and provided sort of a delicate version of Gordon Korman's On the Run books, with some good conversation about parent abandonment, etc.
