Her parents are gone, and she doesn't know where or why. Mysteriously, a man, claiming to be her uncle, has appeared on the scene, and the authorities trust him to care for her. Every night she hears him coming up the stairs, and then the key turns in the lock. She's trapped. Who is this man and what is going on? Great suspense. I "book talk" this to 4th and 5th graders. The story opens with an Native American legend about Skeleton Man, who gets hungry, eats a few of his fingers, keeps eating himself, runs out of body parts, and then lies in wait for family members to return home to satisfy his cravings. A beaut!
