The quiet home and life of Scarlet and her mother on Parrish Island, Oregon, is disturbed with the arrival of pregnant Juliet, Hayden, and dog Zeus. During the spring and summer, seventeen year-old Scarlet watches her sister, Juliet, struggle to develop the maturity she needs to be both a wife and a mother. At the same time Scarlet learns to balance her need to support others with her own needs to develop as an independent and whole person.
This is a story of first loves, giving up the security of old comfortable relationships, clinging to old ways of being, and growing up. This story meanders through the lives of the main characters and the secondary characters.
