Xena and Xander Holmes found out in the first book in this series that they are the great-great-great-grandchildren of the one and only Sherlock Holmes and they have been given a book of the case files that this greatest of all detectives was not able to solve. Having triumphed over their first unsolved case, they are off on a well-deserved and much anticipated vacation at a Bed and Breakfast in a bucolic English village.

They begin their vacation by practicing their skills of observation by playing The Game. Xander has a tremendous advantage because of his photographic memory but Xena doesn't miss much either. So choosing a young boy who is passing by, they look him over and then deduce that he is a city boy. How did they know? The clues my dear Dr. Watson, the clues. At the B & B they learn their great ancestor had spent time in this small village and that he had been unable to solve the case of a mysterious beast.

That was long ago but Xena and Xander are about to encounter a monster of their own. Fur caught in the fencing? Footprints? Howling? What is going on in this town and will the kids be able to solve this mystery before someone gets badly hurt? These are especially fun for readers who like to solve the mystery themselves before they read to the end. Somewhat suspenseful but not too intense.
