Saint Francis and the Wolf

In the city of Gubbio Saint Francis finds all the doors locked up tight. Where is everyone? What is happening? It turns out they are being terrorized by a wolf. What can be done? The city leaders decide to fight the wolf. They send out their bravest knight, their army and finally a great war machine. All fail to destroy the wolf. At last, in desperation, the city leaders decide to allow Saint Francis, with his gentle ways, to meet with the wolf on their behalf. The wolf cannot "resist the friar's gentle understanding." Peace comes to Gubbio.
