rocks and minerals

Whenever I'm out for a hike with my grandkids, I am always looking for ways to show them the story that nature is telling us - the story that is all around them.  You see it in the plants and the trees and maybe a river or the ocean.  But one of the stories that is right there for us is the story being told in the rocks and the part of the Earth itself that we are putting our feet down on.

So how fantastic to find this little gem that is packed with information about what our families would be seeing on that hike - information that is close up and can be held in your hand - like a rock - and information that can be imagined like the core of the Earth way, way, way down deep below exactly where we are standing.

Jill McDonald begins the story out in our own garden one day when our shovel hits something down in the dirt and we discover a rock. The door opens to ask the wonderful questions of what is a rock?  What is it made of?  We are introduced to minerals and we get to see where we have minerals in our own houses everyday.  Minerals, it turns out, are friends and we even own some minerals of our own inside our own bodies.  How cool is that?

This board book takes us deeper into the Earth itself to the core and the mantle and out to the sand on the beach and beyond to the asteroids in space.  Young listeners are going to suddenly realize they are held in a world of nature's rocks and minerals.  Our amazing world!

Bright colors, engaging pictures, information presented to connect to the child - your teeth, your birthstone, the feel of sand on your feet - make this a book that will satisfy the hunger for information in our Investigators, reach to the sense of wonder in our Champions, give our Teamplayers a solid sense of the physical world around them and tickle the curiosity of our Jokesters.

The next time I head out for a family hike, I'm going to make sure we've all read this book filled with clues so we can see the story in the world around us. Something for everyone!
