Here's a new middle grade novel entitled RED THREAD SISTERS by Carol Antoinette Peacock, and I’m just enchanted by it. Wen, an abandoned Chinese daughter, has lived at the orphanage with Shu Ling for six years, since she was five years old. But we meet her on the day that her adoptive American family arrives and she must leave her best friend behind. After three chapters I’m completely hooked. The stakes are high in this book, as Wen has innocently promised her disabled friend that she will find an American family for her too. There’s so much to recommend here—the emotionally engaging plot, the pitch-perfect storytelling, the multi-cultural nature of the story, the adoption theme. There’s a fabulous trailer at the author’s website www.carolpeacock.com and some great review clips. SLJ said “perfectly paced . . . heartwarming and joyous.” I agree so far!
What a perfect book for the holiday season or a long winter night. Ages 8-11 224 pages 978-0670013869
