Red Kite, Blue Kite

Somewhere in China two kites are flying high in the sky. The red kite belongs to little Tai Shan and the blue one belongs to his Baba. They stand side by side and watch their kites hop and giggle and Baba tells stories while they play. Life is good until the day comes when the people with red armbands come to the village and send Baba to a labor camp. *Tai Shan has to go to live with Granny Wang, a farmer in the small village next to Baba's labor camp. Tai Shan sees Baba every Sunday for a while. Then, one day, Baba tells Tai Shan to fly his red kite high in the sky so Baba can see it and know Tai Shan is safe. Baba says he will fly his blue kite high in the sky. It will be a secret signal. *Between 1966 and 1976 the leader of the country Mao Zedong "ordered all citizens to condemn and eliminate anything that did not meet the revolutionary standard so that China would not stray from the Communist path." This is the story of a family who survived the Cultural Revolution.
