THE LEGEND BEGINS... this is book two in the new series from Andrew Lane gifting us with the story of Sherlock Holmes at age fourteen beginning to follow his path into the dark, shifting sands of murder, thievery and mayhem.

As the story begins, Sherlock is living with Amyus Crow in the English countryside while his parents are away. With Amyus Sherlock is learning all the skills of observation, deduction and perception that will serve him so well as the world's greatest detective. Amyus, "the big American," can take anything from his surroundings be they wilderness, townhome or village and use it as a "springboard for a question, a problem or a logical conundrum." He is constantly probing and pushing Sherlock to notice more, see connections, understand beyond what is instantly apparent.

Into these challenging lessons strides Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's older brother, seemingly arrived to visit his younger sibling but soon revealing that he is there on an errand of great secrecy and urgency. Sherlock will take it upon himself to gather a friend, a boy named Matty, for a mutual adventure, thinking he can aid Mycroft and bring him information he seeks. The two boys place themselves directly into an international intrigue that will create danger, set back Mycroft's efforts and cost lives.

This is an adventure that experiments with re-writing American history. John Wilkes Booth has not perished in the fire as previously recorded but is instead alive and well and living down the road with some power-hungry, nefarious, twisted miscreants. It's written as an adventure that hops the continents and as a story of personal growth. Sherlock will have to wrestle with difficult questions and complex choices.

A self-reliant young lady, Virginia, joins Sherlock in his mission and introduces him to a whole new range of feelings and interests. She's a refreshing character and a strong enough female to match Sherlock's already respectable talents. We'll watch to see how that develops as the series hopefully continues. A combination of history, puzzle, adventure, and coming of age set in the 1860's.
