On a cold, dark and windy night there comes a tap at the door. Who could it be? Ah, it's Pirate Pat and he has a treasure map with him. This beginning reader is designed for two voices, the beginner and a proficient reader. Where many early readers tell the story through the pictures, this one uses the pictures but gives much of the story line to the proficient voice with the beginner adding little embellishments. So, on the left hand side of the page, "Well, we were scared, but not our Gran. She went to look:" Then, the beginning reader chimes on the right side of the page with "it is a man." Meanwhile the picture shows a shadowy figure in the door! It definitely has a British feel to it. There's enough of a story to make the most beginning of readers feel he or she is really reading a book. 32 pages Usborne: Very First Reading, Book 1 Ages 4-7
