Today you can take a picture with your cell phone and email it around the world, but in the 1800's, photography was just emerging. It was cumbersome and time-consuming and not considered "true" art. But there was one man who had an idea that showed the power of this new invention. Matthew B. Brady was successful portrait photographer during the 1860's. He had the idea of recording the daily lives of soldiers and the aftermath of battle. He hired, trained and outfitted dozens of field photographers who documented a war- the Civil War- showing the folks back home, for the first time, what their loved ones were enduring. Despite the limits of the camera, the photos had such impact that, even today, we find them to be haunting images. Submitted by M.G.
