Nobel Genes

The question is are you made of a unique material that has been created by the universe or are you the sum of the product of your family genes? Some kids are lucky enough to grow up in a normal family with a mother and a father and school and a dog. This boy is not that kid. He has been told by his mother for years that he is the product of a sperm bank and that the donor was a Nobel Prize winner. He is expected to have Nobel genes since he's a product of the Nobel gene pool. But try as he might, this kid just can't figure out where his genius lies much to the deep disappointment of his mother. As you watch the story unfold, you start to see that this kid has a huge burden on his shoulders. We're talking about his mother who is very emotionally unstable and takes regular rides to the ambulance due to drug overdose. Painfully, we watch the child become the adult and the adult consistently lose touch with reality and fall apart. The sensitivity and the steps the downward takes are so painstakingly crafted. It's as though you have the ability to see inside the most private world of a family as it writhes. For teens who live in this world this book would be a validating mirror. More is unveiled toward the end which requires maturity beyond middle school readers. Ages 14 and up 181 pages
