Horses! The best animals in the world and how amazing when Pat's father tells her this is the summer she will learn to ride. But when he puts her in the car and drives her toward horseback riding, she is dismayed to see they are stopping in Dogpatch..one of the worst parts of town.
There is quite a cast of unsavory characters hanging around as well. Not quite what she was expecting. At first she's the butt of the jokes of two of the other young people working at the stable because of her "fancy" riding clothes.
When Mrs. Mack arrives, the story takes off. Mrs. Mack is one of those special people in the world who is filled with life and love and compassion for wounded animals of all types. She gets Pat up on horse after horse, week after week, and slowly Pat becomes comfortable in different situations and on different horse personalities. But it is one horse..one very special horse.. Penny ....who has caught her eye. Will the day ever come when Pat will be able to sit astride the horse who holds her heart?
