Monty and The Mushrooms

A marmot’s peace and quiet gets disturbed by noisy mushroom neighbors in this delightfully zany picture book perfect for fans of Unicorns Are the Worst! and Dragons Love Tacos!

Everyone knows mushrooms are the loudest creatures in the forest. They’re why worms go underground and birds have wings—to get away from the noise!

Everyone also knows marmots love quiet, especially irritable ones like Monty. All is well until he gets boisterous, cheerful, mushroom neighbors, with their endless mushroom jokes, mushroom poetry, and mushroom songs. What’s a marmot to do?---from the publisher

Welcome to the wacky world of mushrooms who have a Mushroom Song and they aren't afraid to use it.  The forest creatures have all apparently learned the hard way.  The hummingbirds keep the hums to a minimum and the trees know how to aim their acorns precisely.   It's a mad, mad, mad mushroom world and then...

Yes, and then... a marmot moves in.  You, like me, may not be able to picture a marmot at this moment.  But shortly you will meet a marmot who goes by the name of Monty and is a lovely shade of blue.  When we meet him is  quietly and most intently reading an important book on putting boats into other things.  (My guess is the author/illustrator on the cover have highly offended either Jared Chapman or Dev Petty in the past few years and are now getting their comeuppance by being outed in this illustration. Perhaps another story is waiting to be told.)

Unfortunately for our Monty, the mushroom gang has discovered him, their new neighbor, and all things happy  mushroom are about to be unleashed and lucky for us, this will include the Mushroom Song. Feel free to sing along.

So, Monty asks nicely.  Monty shouts. Monty really tries to get those maniacal mushrooms to give him some peace and quiet.

The moral of the story is sometimes we aren't really listening.   But.... there is usually someone who is.... cue the Jaws theme music.

A fabulous read-aloud. Prepare the tenderhearted in advance.
