Take action adventure and add science fiction, then blend in the male struggles over power, self-reliance, and fears, and you get a sense of this surging page turner.
Begin with Thomas who arrives in a new place with no memories of who he is or where he comes from. He knows what a movie theater is but he can't remember ever having seen a movie. The world he has just dropped into is a society of boys. Boys are the population. Boys have designed the order. Boys are trying to figure out how to escape. They don't know where they are or why they are in this place and they don't understand the enemy.
It's a fascinating world of males working together to survive and taking care of the tasks needed to live within the walls of the Glade. Outside the Glade are the Grievers-a combination slug and machine. Each night the doors of the Glade close and anyone left outside is doomed to a horrible death. Outside the walls, everything appears to be a maze and the strongest and fastest of the boys will risk their lives to run the maze. If a boy is caught outside the walls by a Griever, he will be stung and must be rushed back to The Glade to receive a serum before he beings The Changing, a gruesome, violent, painful process.
Then, the day after Thomas arrives, a girl shows up in the "lift" that normally brings one boy a month. Things begin to change. Who is Thomas? Can he trust himself? Can he be trusted by the others? Will the order of the Glade survive his arrival?
