Rory Devereaux has just had a near fatal encounter with a Jack the Ripper copycat and she is recovering from her stab wounds in Bristol where her parents are keeping a very watchful eye onEven though she knows she needs to be where she can rest, when her therapist suddenly suggests going back to her boarding school at Wexford she jumps at the chance thinking that getting back into a normal routine will help. Once there, she finds that things may never be normal again. She has recently learned that she can destroy dead people (ghosts) with a single touch. Is she the terminus that the Shades need to stay in business?

Lying to everyone all the time is beginning to wear on Rory. She can’t talk about her ability to see ghosts or her association with the Shades. Plus she is way behind in school and can’t seem to catch up.

Charlotte, one of the girls from Wexford introduces her to a new therapist that gives her hope but something is just not sitting right when murders start happening again. The Shades don’t want Rory involved but can they really do their work without her? Is this going to be the end of the Shades forever just when Rory has found a place she feels comfortable?
