Fairytales are wonderful things and in the hands of the talented David Wiesner this one gleams and beckons us in.

Take serious note of the dragon in this story because as David Wiesner's career unfolds, the dragon will have cameo roles in THE THREE LITTLE PIGS and more.  Look for him!

As the story begins, a prince and princess, brother and sister in this case, are living happily ever after until their father meets a beautiful enchantress...yes, we all know what happens when an enchantress gets in the picture...and the next thing we know the brother and sister have a ...stepmother.  Cue the Jaws music.

This lady lives up the grand tradition of stepmothers by being consumed with jealousy at the sight of Princess Margaret, the sister, and turning her into a dragon.  Can the sister speak and tell of her plight? No she cannot.  The townspeople discover that they need to feed the dragon well and then it's a matter of waiting until someone comes along to save the day.

A glorious retelling of a fairytale which has at its core the love and loyalty of a good family.   David Wiesner illustrated this book at the same time he was working on FREE FALL.  Take the two together and you'll see the first step he took here in this book and the giant leap he took with FREE FALL.  That's where he hit his stride and began to create his incredible picture books for children.
