Standing up on the deck of the dredge, Call and Poe are searching for stars.  This is their moment.  They have a plan.  The two of them are going to run for it.  They'll get off the ship and start a new life for themselves. It's not the first time they've done it.   The two of them came out of the orphanage at age 15 and they've been making a life since that day.  One thing they didn't expect was to fall in love..with each other.  But that day came too.  Now they have each other and that's all they need.

When Poe goes below deck to help with the repairs, she is surprised to learn that the drifters, the traders, have attacked.  Back up on deck she sees two bodies.  One is the second mate. The other is Call.  He's gone.  Gone..and she is alone with nothing left of her life.

Two years later the Admiral is about to launch his new ship.  It's a dredge but this time the ship has armor that was designed by an innovative designer by the name of Poe Blythe.  She saw the concept in her dreams and brought it to life with the Admiral's resources.

Now Poe is taking command of the dredge, headed out to find gold for the Admiral, and determined to get revenge on the traders. They took her everything and now she's going to make them pay for it.  Trusting no one,  Poe is going up against the enemy.  But who is the enemy?  How can she get back from them as much as she has lost?

***************

Who do you become when you have nothing left to lose? There is something Poe Blythe, the seventeen-year-old captain of the Outpost’s last mining ship, wants far more than the gold they tear from the Serpentine River.   Revenge.    Poe has vowed to annihilate the river raiders who robbed her of everything two years ago. But as she navigates the treacherous waters of the Serpentine and realizes there might be a traitor among her crew, she must also reckon with who she has become, who she wants to be, and the ways love can change and shape you. Even—and especially—when you think all is lost.

Ally Condie, the international bestselling author of the Matched trilogy, returns with an intricately crafted and emotionally gripping story of one young woman’s journey to move beyond the grief and anger that control her and find the inner strength to chart her own course.
