Sixth grader Julep needs to raise her grades so to earn extra credit she's going to try out for the school play. It's not that she's all that excited about acting but when she doesn't win a role she's actually disappointed. Happily for us she gets a job working behind the scenes as part of the stage crew and eventually moves up to Assistant Director. This is a girl who really does succeed when she tries but doesn't realize it. Her self-doubt will appeal to many kids who will watch her in action and perhaps say to themselves, huh, maybe things are really like that for me as well. Entertaining and quietly reassuring.
