Iris and Walter are best friends and they are both in Miss Cherry's class at school. Iris loves school and she loves her teacher. But, one day when Iris gets to school, she finds out that they are going to have a substitute teacher. The classroom door opens in with a touch of anxiety and apprehension and who walks in but Iris' own wonderful, much-loved grandfather. Oh, what a special day. Grandfather is the perfect substitute teacher, telling stories, playing musical chairs at indoor recess and best of all, choosing Iris to be his special helper. Miss Cherry is still sick the next day and Iris arrives with a smile and an expectation of being special again. But, today is different. Other children get to sit by Grandfather and pass out the crackers. Grandfather is so busy helping other children that he does not have even a minute for Iris. This feels pretty awful. Iris wants her Grandfather back! The feelings resonate beautifully and the playful, charming and colorful illustrations add a note of warmth and reassurance even in the darkest moments. Perfect for children who like a familiar setting and an even keel story. This is the eighth book in the series. 44 pages Ages 4-8
