It is not a good day for anyone on Abbott Street today. It is a hot, hot day and Kishi and Renee are not speaking to each other. They are mad so this is a best friends breaking up day. All the neighbors notice that the girls are not playing together the way they always do and they offer them opportunities to be together. Maybe they would like to come over to help Miss Johnson do her crossword puzzle, or help Mr. Paul weed his garden, or maybe help MIss Johnson make a pitcher of ice cold lemonade to make that hot cool down a little. But no, the girls are determined never to speak to each other again because Kishi bought the last blue ice pop from the ice cream man. When it seems as though there is no hope of ever getting these two friends back together, suddenly the sound of the jump rope rings out across the neighborhood. That rhythmic call lure both girls over to turn the ropes and to find their smiles again. 32 pages Ages 5-8
