Banty Hen feels broody and goes looking for a safe place to lay her eggs. Ahh, here's just the spot and seven little eggs find a cozy spot underneath Mama's soft feathers. Then she waits. Peep, peep, peep. Cluck, cluck, cluck. The wonder of the cracking eggs is speckled with a bit of humor as one chick ends up with the broken shell on his head. Then, it's out into the big wide world for all and Mama has a huge job keeping them out of harm's way. The fun of this book is spotting the hint of danger that the illustrator has woven into the picture. First, it's just a paw...hmmm. what could that be? Next it's the diamond shapes on the end of a snake. Oooh, what could that be? Then, a furry striped tail thrusts itself into the picture with the rest of the animal concealed behind a tree trunk. There certainly are a lot of animals interested in these fluffy chicks. Thank goodness there are friends in the barnyard who want to help to keep the babies safe. Big collage illustrations make for a great read aloud for the youngest ones. 40 pages
