I have two grandsons, ages four and about-to-be six, and I am looking for ways to bring them to the wonder of nature. They are growing up in suburbia, albeit in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia with Massanutten mountain looming through their dining room window, but I can see all the pulls of the ipad and Spiderman and I really want them to turn and look at the natural world just as hard.

This wonderful, gentle picture book just may be the bridge between these lively boys and their connection to the great outdoors and all of its wonder.

A small stitched bear is out for a walk in the woods one day when he comes upon a small white egg in the leaf litter. The face of the bear is instantly touching as he gets down in the dirt on all four paws to study it more closely. He's a little guy in a great big world. The trees around him are tall. Nevertheless our bear spots a nest on high and he knows, being a bear of clearly at least medium brain, that this egg should be in that nest along with the other two white eggs.

Page by page and frame by frame, our gentle hero goes about the task of figuring out how to get the egg from his paws into that nest.

Twigs can build a ladder. Working together might do the trick. The pace of the story is lovely. It's a slow and careful pace that children will follow closely and thoughtfully. In fact it invites thought.

This is where my hope lies. That my beloved grandsons will see themselves in that woods. That they will understand that they can stop and help a fragile creature. That they can keep the order in the world around them through appreciation, respect and a touch of reverence.

The smallness of the bear, the care of the situation and the connections among the creatures make this a gem of a story.
