Glory Be

Eleven year old Glory loves to celebrate her birthday each year in her town of Hanging Moss, Mississippi. It's 1964 though and change is in the wind. Each year since forever Glory has held her birthday party at the town swimming pool and her family comes together with her friends, especially Frankie, her best friend, for a day of fireworks and picnics and doodlebugs.

This year Glory will be the magic age of twelve but things are not the same. This year Frankie is telling her secrets to his big brother J.T. This year her sister Jesslyn doesn't want to play Junk Poker anymore with the treasures they've stored in shoeboxes under the bed. Instead Jesslyn is lying to her father and going off with the new boy in town. This year Glory is playing with Laura, a Yankee, who has come with her mother to encourage African Americans to vote. This year the sign on the pool fence says Closed. Glory is growing up in the middle of hatred, fear of change and anger. These are the days of the Civil Rights movement in the American South and people are not choosing to give up their old ways easily.

The story is told from Glory's young perspective. She watches her new friend Laura drink from the Colored Only water fountain. She watches as Frankie's brother threatens violence against Robbie out of fear and insecurity. She finds a sanctuary in the town library and in the courage of the town librarian. 202 pages Ages 9-13
