George and Martha Rise and Shine

Three delightful stories, The Fibber, The Experiment and The Picnic make up this highly entertaining early readers about a pair of well-matched hippos, George and Martha. They each have their little quirks and happily the other balances things quite nicely. In The Fibber George decides to impress Martha with his background. He claims champion jumper, wicked pirate and snake charmer as previous occupations hoping she'll think highly of him. She thinks highly all right and gets a stuffed snake out of the closet. George proves his championship jumper claim instantly. That clever Martha. Too clever perhaps in the second story as she turns to the serious scientific study of fleas. Fleas? Imagine it....scratch, scratch....And finally Martha is determined to go on a picnic but George is glued to his comfy bed. How will she get him to join her? Ever enterprising, Martha finds a way. The fun is wise and the illustrations are gleeful. A great early reader series.
