In a village in Vietnam young Mai sees the birds in the cage every morning and every morning she wishes she had enough money to set them free. That she cannot afford yet when she meets a young girl who has cut her feet on glass, Mai generously gives her the beautiful red velvet shoes she owns. As time passes, this young girl in turn passes on a good deed to someone who crosses her path and the chain continues. Through the series of good deeds we get a glimpse into the lifestyle and beliefs of these people with their rice cakes, their Buddhist monks, good and bad karma and the samsara-a wheel of life. It's beautiful to watch the kindness and the generosity of each character create the possibilities for much more goodness and it eventually makes its way back to Mai. 32 pages
