Fledgling

Fledgling

The American kestrel, "the smallest falcon found in North America," is the star of this coming of age tale. High on a skyscraper in a large city a young kestrel clings to the ledge knowing he must be the first from his brood to take the leap and attempt to fly. He jumps. He lands and jumps again. Look he can fly. Success. Suddenly a hawk is on his tail and he must seek out a safe harbor in this foreign land of people and buildings and unknowns. He tries a ferris wheel, a subway, and realizes he is lost. With vivid, complex illustrations that deliver the flight straight from the bird's point of view, the tension builds along with our hopes that this bird can find its way back home. A great story to connect our children to the natural world around them even in the heart of a city. Ages 5-9 32 pages
