Five Flavors of Dumb

Five Flavors of Dumb

Piper is eighteen, smart, a good kid and not too popular the day she stands in front of her high school on a Monday morning watching the newly crowned winner of the Seattle Battle of the Bands, Dumb, play for the rockin' crowd. Energy is throbbing and Piper is experiencing an amazing feeling of release as all that teenage angst and stress and confusion is momentarily expelled into the universe carried away by the electricity of the music all around her. Now, notice as the door swings open for her because this is a step toward an entirely new direction and an entirely new sense of self. Piper is watching Josh, Tash, Will, the bandmembers and there's also Kallie, a fellow onlooker, with a sleek body, perfect skin and a face to die for but Piper can't hear anything because she is deaf. The story is a journey that peers into the down to earth world of rock stars Jimi Hendrix and Kurt Cobain and the down to earth world of these high school personalities who are not quite as magical as they appear on stage. Piper is about to enter this world of rock music as the manager of Dumb. She's going to get them paying jobs and make some money for herself along the way. She had always counted on attending Gallaudet University using the college money her grandparents left for her. But, she's just learned that her parents have spent all the college funds on a cochlear implant for her baby sister, Grace, who was born deaf but would have a chance to hear with the implant. Piper is stunned. Piper feels dismissed. Piper starts an unplanned journey that will involve unexpected crushes, newfound friendships, and personal transformation. The girl you meet on page one is not the girl you leave, reluctantly, on page 338. It's a great ride filled with gritty insight into selfishness, possibility, perseverance, and most of all the willingness to risk to find your truths. Well done! Ages 14 and up 338 pages
