Point of view is in full flourish in this tale of Christopher Columbus "discovering" America. In the mind of a young Indian boy, Taino, the foreigners who arrive by ship are dangerous and they come not bearing gifts but ready to take the gold, the customs and even the identity of the Indians who are already living well with their own culture when the Europeans arrive. This is a view of the story not included in the traditional accounts of American history and offers and tremendous opportunity to discuss honoring differences and respecting others.
As a young boy Taino first warns his people because of a dream he has before Columbus arrives and then as an old man he looks back on all that was lost. Great perspective... this is the rest of the story.
