It's the Sixties and America is at war in Vietnam. Rick has decided to join the Army. He's never been very good at anything, and he really wants to prove to himself and to his parents that he is good enough at something. The Army selects him to be a dog handler and teams him up with a German shepherd named Cracker. What does Cracker think of this guy? Together they head into combat...the mission is special ops - the purpose is to save some GIs who've been captured by the Viet Cong. Holding deathly still, Rick and Cracker wait; they can see the Cong moving around them. Rick's body is beginning to twitch from holding so still. Cracker hears the sound of an explosion. There is the smell of blood. Don't look at the Cong - they can sense your eyes on them. Rick quickly looks away. Then the awful feeling...what about Cracker's eyes? Can they feel a dog's eyes too? 320 pages Ages 10-14
