This was my favorite children's book growing up. The story plays out in our imagination - an adventure turned scary but ends by showing us a courageous heart and the belief that anything is possible if you believe it -will prevail. Too scary? I don't think so, the psychological lessons and creative inspiration are what speaks in this book (the purpose of stories, to grow imagination) Witches (an unexpected problem expressing itself in a villianous witch) talking animals (our best friends depicted as pets/animals that can verbally communicate - awesome!) and circumstances that are overcome because the unthinkable solution came to life through belief in our heart that anything is possible if we believe and act. These are the things that fascinate creative, young minds.

In no way does this book promote witchcraft, cannibalism, psychodelic drugs use or encourage kids in the way of practicing evil magic, and shouldn't have been banned. This is how imagination works. Very common ways to express a situation that young people cant verbally articulate - an evil witch that wants to eat you and you must escape (this is the worst thing young people think of on a imaginative level)- this is the basis for most books, fairy tales, stories. The ideas behind them usually come from what children have expressed/imagined to us already and is spot on on their level of understanding with overcoming situations creatively. Spooky, interesting, magical, fun. Keep it.
