You can really tell that Ethan Long understands what it's like to be a kid. Maybe he even remembers trying to learn to read himself.
Anyway, this book is a gem for kids who are learning to read... reluctantly. It's also a gem for kids who need to find out that there are books out there that are really, really fun. Like as a fun as playing a video game.
So, the aliens have landed and it's much to the dismay of a snake and a monkey. That in itself is fantastic. Then the purple aliens - who doesn't love a purple alien - start communicating or actually failing to communicate. Our Earthling animals are not happy and they do their very best to get out of here.
Now, the genius here comes on a couple of levels. First, the words our reluctant reader must tackle are Beep, Bop and Boop. Once you nail those, you've pretty much got this story down and you can start "reading" the pictures. The adventure goes wild and involves a pterodactyl.
Easy to read. Fun to read. Slips in a little message about communication and not being instantly afraid of someone who is different from you.
Like I said, Ethan Long really "gets" kids. It's so, let me repeat that, so important that our children find out that reading is fun and that we hand them books that they naturally connect with.
Ya gotta practice this reading thing to get the hang of it and practice is much better when it's fun.
