*****

Stand on the beach and look out to sea as waves lap gently on your feet and you might think that all is calm and serene, peaceful, quiet, soothing the soul...

But in the shallows and the rockpools there is much activity as "blowfish puffs himself up wide and seahorse drifts by with the tide.."

Part of the Backyard series which includes Bush Bubs and Bush Bugs,  which encourages our youngest readers to look closely at the world around them and discover what lives there,  this is the latest addition that shifts the focus to the seashore. Stunning illustrations in Milroy's distinctive style, simple text which highlights the movement of each creature (and which are a focus of the teaching notes) and gentle rhymes introduce some of the inhabitants of the water that might be seen if you take the time to stop and look closely, culminating in an invitation to spot each in the final collage, and perhaps even beginning a checklist to tick off as each is seen in the wild - which, in itself, might start questions about which in the book do not inhabit local waters and might be seen instead.

As with the previous books, this is not just for little people - there is much to take the older reader into their local environment too, perhaps even investigating the alliteration in the titles and considering what could be next....
