Ask the Passengers

Ask the Passengers

Astrid knows that figuring out who you are is not a simple question that can be answered quickly.  Although Kristina, her best friend, is gay, she pretends to be in a serious heterosexual relationship and even ends up as the school’s beloved homecoming queen.  Astrid has yet to work up the courage to tell Kristina that she has been seeing another girl in secret, not to mention sharing this information with her less than accepting family.

Astrid has so much love built up inside her, but she is afraid to give it those closest to her, so she sends it toward the sky to airplane passengers who have no choice but to accept it without strings.  As Astrid gets interested in philosophy, she starts to study different ancient philosophers, and she admires the way Socrates doesn’t let society define who he is.  King perfectly captures the uncertainty of adolescence in this honest and reflective novel.  Ask the Passengers is a must read for thoughtful teenagers on the path to self- awareness.
