Fourteen-year-old Daniel and his mother are slaves owned by an evil man named Captain Ives. Daniel learns that his father had earned enough revolutionary notes to buy their freedom when he served in the army during the war. His father is dead now, and Captain Ives secretly holds those notes. Daniel decides to get them back and, as a result of his efforts, finds himself being sent off into slavery down in the West Indies. A storm rises up while he is aboard ship.... Daniel's adventures eventually lead him to play a role in advising the great men who are writing the Constitution. This is a story of heart and of bravery. It is subject to censorship for use of the word "nigger" by the authors. Other books in this series include Who is Carrie? and War Comes to Willy Freeman. 208 pages Ages 9-13
