Good for Reluctant Readers?

This is a book about four boys who are not enthralled with school. One of the boys, Tommy, is missing, which ordinarily wouldn't be an issue except for what happened in Mr. Haberman's English class. Mr. Haberman brings in a large blue barrel and asks students to guess what is inside. He asks students how they would feel if they killed someone. The three boys get it in their heads that Mr. Haberman killed their friend and put his body in the barrel. Did he? Read the book and find out.

I highly recommend this book for reluctant mature readers. They will easily identify with the characters and the author keeps the reader wondering what happened to Tommy. The first-person narrator is one of the boys and the redeeming aspect of the book is what he learns at the end of the book. Recommended for ages 13 and up.

Recommended by Karen Limbaugh, Retired High School Librarian.
