Alice tries to follow a teacher's often-quoted "Be a person who makes things happen; don't just let life happen to you." How can her friend Pamela's mother be dating a guy from the athletic club, argue with him, then ask Pamela's dad to take her back? 8th grade best friends Alice, Pamela, and Elizabeth try to help one another with their personal questions, trouble with family, boy friends, and how life is always dishing up embarrassing surprises.
