Taking the money out of her sock drawer, Aubrey goes to the store to buy corn and beans. Then, she heads back home. It's pretty quiet there. Her father and sister have died in a automobile accident and now her mother's grief has taken her off on her own journey. She went out the door and she hasn't come back, leaving Aubrey alone. Then, Aubrey's grandmother comes to take her back to Vermont and back to a whole new way of life.
Aubrey is grieving. Luckily, she has the good fortune of meeting a new friend up north and of having a grandmother who cares so deeply for her.
