Because of Anya

Keely is trying to hard to fit in and have friends but she feels she's one step away from being like Anya, a girl that no one talks to. All the girls do what Stef tells them to. She's the queen bee. But, now Stef wants Keely to find out if Anya is wearing a wig. Why would Anya have a wig on? Does she have cancer? This is a great book about the social politics of girls in the fifth grade and about standing up for what you believe in and being yourself. All of this wisdom is woven through a story about being sensitive to kids who have alopecia areata or any other disease. It's about having compassion and empathy and being willing to put yourself in someone else's shoes or in this case to imagine life in a wig.
