Donkey Reads

When the Mongols overtake a small village in Anatolia, each household must bring a gift to their new rulers.

One family is so poor that all they can give is their very old donkey, which will surely earn father Mustafo a beating from the master.

When the village wise man assures the tyrant that he can teach the donkey to read, he is given one month to prove it – or he will get the beating instead of Mustafo!

How can Nasreddin Hoca teach a donkey to read?

Will he escape the tyrant’s anger?

Andre Letria’s paintings show the tyrant’s great and blustering anger, the villagers’ fear, and the donkey’s eagerness to learn Nasreddin’s clever lessons in Muriel Mandell’s charming adaptation of a Turkish folktale.
