Town That Fooled the British: A War of 1812 Story

It's August on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in a town called St. Michaels. The British are waging war against the Americans and finding their mighty Navy challenged by the powerful American ships. St. Michael's is one of the towns where the skilled citizens are building these ships and the British have set their sites on the little town, determined to destroy it.

On this day a young boy named Henry watches his father don his uniform and pick up his musket and gunpowder. Father is off to do battle leaving his family to evacuate in search of safety.

It's a night filled with mist and the British ships are silently and secretly making their way enshrouded by the fog. When will they be within range to fire their town-smashing cannon? In a vividly real portrayal of the story we join Henry as he envisions a plan... a marvelous way out for his hometown.

The illustrations use light and intensity to convey the danger and the hope. Does Henry really have a plan that could save everyone? The story brings history alive dropping us right into the middle of the danger and the fear. This is the perfect story to read when introducing students/children to the War of 1812. (Part of the Tales of Young Americans Series) Ages 7-10 32 pages 978-1585364848
