Boston comes alive with the screaming of the gulls, the shouts of the fish merchants and the "clop of horses' hooves on stone cobbles." Elsie is carefree until the sudden death of her Mama. Then, Papa takes her west to Nebraska on a train. Loaded down with carpetbags and Elsie with the comforting presence of her canary, Timmy Tune, father and daughter listen to the "clacketing of the wheels" as they cross a "sea of grass." It's hard to change and Elsie stays close to her canary and the possessions they have brought from their old home. She does not want to step out into the new world. Then, one day, Timmy Tune flies out the door and gets lost. Elsie doesn't think, she just charges out into the tall grass looking for the one thing she feels connected to and that is how she finally opens her eyes and her ears to the sights and sounds of the plains. Written in a poetic voice, the story celebrates the power of the plains and the courage of the families who left all they knew to build new homes and lives. 40 pages Ages 5-9
