Joha is walking along on a hot, dusty road on his way to Baghdad when he stops to rest in the shade of an old crumbling wall. The wall collapses and reveals a sealed jar and when Joha opens the jar, he finds a magical wishing stick. Oh, what to wish for? He begins by asking for a pair of red velvet slippers. Does he get them? No, in fact, his own shoes disappear. Everything he wishes for goes wrong. He ends up carrying a donkey instead of having the donkey carry him and then worst of all, he is commanded by the Sultan to wish the wart off the Sultan's nose. Joha's bad luck continues and the wart begins to grow and grow. The pictures are filled with very expressive characters who add a level of humor and fun to this rambunctious folktale. Will Joha's wish ever come true? 40 pages Ages 5-8
