"If we had a schooner, we would have our class at sea/And study the Atlantic, where the great blue whales roam free." With these lines, we begin an imaginary journey, visiting such diverse spots as the Great Wall of China, the Everglades, and outer space. At each stop, the travelers, guided by a young woman, are treated to amazing sights. Yet discovering natural and man-made phenomena is not the purpose of this beautiful book. That it is a tribute to those who teach our children becomes clear by the end: "Our classroom is our vessel,/always headed someplace new./Because you are our teacher,/We'll explore the world with you."

Two lines of rhymed text on each page make Sherry North's gem perfect for reading aloud to young children. Marcellus Hall's bright, colorful, expressive illustrations bring each location to life. Children will enjoy pointing out the precious little details, such as a mouse who makes an often humorous appearance throughout. Because You Are My Teacher is a natural for the beginning of the school year, Teacher Appreciation Week, or any time you want to pay tribute to a teacher in your (or your child's) world. Ages 4-7.
