Part of a Series

The Carter family is in the animal rescue business (Carter’s Urban Rescue). They are called in to investigate a horrible smell emanating from the community garden’s tool shed. With most people assuming the odor is a skunk on the loose, the actual answer isn’t discovered until the end of the story when daughter Keisha begins putting together the clues and eliminating the red herrings. Along the way, the Carters must also deal with dive-bombing crows, a seriously injured stray dog, a misunderstood skunk, and a lonely widow.

Author Sue Stauffacher weaves into the plotline interesting information about selected wildlife and what happens when they come in contact with humans. Her author’s notes indicate that she is passionate about “helping kids know what to do when the wild meets the child.” End notes to the story supply quick facts about skunks and crows that would not have fit into the story easily.

The story itself is not a fast-paced thriller filled with life-threatening wildlife encounters. Rather the animals featured are backyard denizens. However, budding naturalists and tender-hearted animal rescuers-to-be could be interested in the facts-within-the-story approach.
