Amy & Roger's Epic Detour
The California house is up for sale and mom is headed to their new life in Connecticut. Amy Curry is going to have to drive across country to join her mother and she's being partnered with an old neighbor named Roger. When Roger shows up to get behind the wheel, Amy sees instantly that he is not what she remembered. Roger is a hot.
But hotness isn't on Amy's mind right now. Her father has just been killed in a car accident and the whole family is grieving. Roger has agreed to come on the trip so he can steer himself back into the path of his lovely ex-girlfriend, Hadley. Hope is springing eternal and Roger thinks if he can just talk to Hadley they can get things back on track.
So there's the set up. Amy, age 17, filled with grief and headed to a new life driving across country with Roger, old family friend, who is hurting from the goodbye of the love of his life. This is one great cross country trip dotted with great pit stops, a honeymoon suite, Roger's music mixes, and some fabulous snacks.
It's Roger behind the wheel with a penchant for explorers and Amy riding shotgun with an encyclopedic knowledge of musicals. They play game after game of Twenty Questions slowly getting more comfortable with each other and beginning to get a sense of each other.
Amy's story takes them through California, Colorado and Kansas and Roger's drama rolls in around Kentucky. They drive the Loneliest Road in the country and share fast food and pain. Each character has a chance to grow from the experience and of course, the best parts are Amy and Roger starting to see each other and their feelings beginning to heat up. A wonderful beach or holiday read. Takes you across country with a slow building romance.
