Alex splashes down in his space capsule in the ocean off the coast of Australia and is taken to a base to recover. While there, the Australian Intelligence folks ask him to go on a mission for them. At first he refuses, but when they tell him that his godfather will be working with him, Alex agrees to go. His godfather knew his parents well and can tell Alex much about who he is.
