Water, Weed and Wait

The Garden Lady, Miss Marigold, pays a visit to Pepper Lane Elementary. She helps them come up with a plan to plant their own garden. They choose a patchy, rough spot of ground along the school’s grouchy neighbor’s fence. As Miss Marigold explains the art of gardening, the children listen and follow her directions. “You must Water, Weed and Wait”, she explains. Although it takes patience to wait for the plants to grow, in seemingly no time at all their garden is in full bloom with color and vegetables. Soon the whole community is invited to a “tasting party.” Even Mr. Barkley, the grouchy neighbor, comes to the party. A great picture book that not only explains the process of growing a garden, but also how friendships can be cultivated as well.

Photos of real school gardens and further explanation of gardening in the back of the book.
