Owen Brown likes to help people. This fourth grader is a member of the H.E.R.O. program at his school. It stands for Help Everyone By Reaching Out and every day they take up collections for hunger relief, earthquake relief, senior citizen housing, flood relief.... you name it they are there to help.
So, when Owen races into school late, runs down the hall, turns a corner and crashes into Dana Runyon, he naturally reaches out to help her. Turns out Owen is too late and much to his horror he stands transfixed as Dana tells him to find the book, in her house and then disappears through the floor in a cloud of black smoke.
Owen gathers a team of students to go in search of Dana even though it means facing danger and possible death.
Using touches of humor and boatloads of mythological figures our heroes cross the River Styx, fork over a handy blue penny, and go in search of Dana among the dead.
This is a great read alike for THE LIGHTNING THIEF for independent readers, ages 7-10, who long for adventure and fantasy but aren't quite ready to take on the older level series.
