What would you expect from a boy who wheezes, sneezes, coughs, has asthma and raging fever and hardly eats?  Maybe a quiet, sheltered life with few risks and days of gentle living would be all we could imagine for him.

But, we're talking Teddy Roosevelt here and instead of coddled living we get the boy and the man who relishes living and seizes each day to live as he decides.  Teddy is a magnificent role model choosing the do what he thought was right, to battle against the status quo, and not to waver in the face of other's judgments and power.

This life story invites every child to consider an unlimited journey filled with zebras and birds and battles both on the field against the enemy or in the arena of politics against the forces of greed and ambition.

The illustrations deliver the depth and glory of this man's world and encourage us to feel at home with his energy and his courage and even to claim some for ourselves.  The storyline is chronological and filled with stirring quotes but the arc of the real plot here is the force of this man's zeal for life and his joyful charge into the lands of doing what is right and following your own inner star.

Fabulous combination of art and hero.
